The Worcestershire Cricket Board 50+ team (Over 50's) play competitive cricket in the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) 50+ Championship. This competition has been in place for over 20 years and provides competitive cricket for those club players of good standard and ex County players who wish to continue their cricket against old adversaries. The ECB 50+ Championship comprises 40 County and Minor County teams divided into 5 regions. Worcestershire is in the same region as Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Herefordshire and Wales. Each team play against each other once a season in the preliminary round with the fixture reversed the following year. The top three of each region progress to the Knock Out rounds until two finalists play for the winning trophy at the end of the season. The competition has provided many club players the opportunity to play with their former heroes on the same cricket field. Such players as Rodney Cass (Essex & Worcestershire CCC), Roger Tolchard (Leicestershire CCC & England), Andy Murtagh (Hampshire CCC), Ted Hemsley (Worcestershire CCC) and Paul Pridgeon (Worcestershire CCC) have all represented the Worcestershire 50+ team in recent years. We look forward to seeing Neal Radford making his debut this season!
The WCB 50+ team have undertaken many overseas tours in recent years, representing the Worcestershire Cricket Board in Senior and Vintage cricket festivals in Barbados, West Indies and Perth, Western Australia. The team has also toured Sydney, Australia. Chile & Argentina, South America. Canada & USA and Cape Town, South Africa as well as Malta, Southern France and Majorca.
In November/December 2008 a tour is planned to Hong Kong and New Zealand plus an option to return via a few days in Fiji. Future tours are planned for Ireland 2009 and possibly another Seniors Festival to the West Indies.
For further details, anyone interested in joining a future touring party should contact the Team Manager – John Barrett. |
